Star Wars Galaxies
Star Wars Galaxies was the second MMO I ever played (after EverQuest) and I was so excited to have a game set in the Star Wars universe. I started playing back in 2003 when the game launched and was overwhelmed with the wonderful sense of immersion in the game. To this day, it still remains one of my favorite games of all time.
When the game first came out, it was quite unique in that you could mix skills from many different professions. This made for a powerful gaming experience where you could truly customize your character and not be forced down one pre-defined path. To be fair, the game was very buggy at first, as if it were still a beta version, but it did improve over time.
I met some wonderful people, many of whom I still play with in other MMO's. This game was also where the character of Kalabakk was born, for whom this website is named. For four and a half years I reveled in the joy of playing in George Lucas's wonderful universe, partaking in adventures, wonderful social events, and just plain having fun.
But then... another game came along that broke subscription records. People flocked to World of Warcraft and the people at Sony Online Entertainment (the makers of Star Wars Galaxies) decided that they needed to change the game in order to compete with World of Warcraft. The result was the Combat Upgrade (CU) that watered down the combat system, and later the New Game Experience (NGE), which destroyed the ability to combine skillsets. The once dynamic game became a shadow of its former self, and I eventually cancelled my account in early 2008.
I have so many great memories of the game and I miss it very much, particularly the character of Kalabakk, but it was a good run and I enjoyed the time I had there. In December of 2011, Star Wars Galaxies was shut down after an 8-year run. Supposedly LucasArts only wanted one Star Wars MMO, so they shut down Star Wars Galaxies to make way for Star Wars: The Old Republic.
