Star Trek Online
I have to admit, when this game first came out, I had absolutely no interest in it. Though I had been really into Star Trek when I was younger, the idea of an MMO for it just didn't excite me.
I eventually broke down and started playing it when most of my friends from City of Heroes went over to play this game. I was pleasantly surprised at how much fun it was. The story takes place in the main timeline, after the events in that J.J. Abrams Star Trek movie (which I still refuse to watch) where the actors played the younger versions of the crew from the original series.
The game had some growing pains, but the folks at Cryptic got their act together and starting creating some realy nice features. You can level up very quickly and the missions do start to get quite repetitive at times, but overall it's an enjoyable game. Once and a while they will release weekly episodes, and there is a user-generated content tool called the Foundry where you can create your own missions. I personally had my fill of creating missions in City of Heroes, but people are very excited about having this feature in Star Trek Online. As an added bonus, the game is free-to-play, so you can have fun without spending any money.
There are some real nice people in the game and you can even find non-combat activities, such as roleplaying or in-game parties. There are even Star Trek Online themed internet radio stations, such as Subspace Radio, where you can meet some very nice people and listen to good music.
If you are tired of the knights/wizards genre of MMO's, this one might be worth a look. At times you have to make your own fun in the game, but it does appear to finally be headed in the right direction.
